I was flying from Los Angeles to New York… single seat, first class, full service all the way. And it was with Conan O’Brian. Now, I’m not the type of free person who can just walk up to a celebrity and start talking… I’m too shy, and I always take my friend’s dating advice… if you want to meet someone, never tip your hand, and let them ante up first.
So, anyway, there I was with Conan O’Brian. Well, to be accurate, I wasn’t with him, but you get the idea. And I’d wanted to meet him, start dating him, marry him, have babies… you get the idea. I have a thing for smart, red headed, sarcastic men, just like Conan O’Brian.
I was technically in a relationship at the time, but it wasn’t going well and we had agreed we we’re free to start dating other people. I even went as far as to register on several online dating sites, as internet dating was really gaining popularity, much more so than traditional dating services (this was in the late 90s). Online dating services are so big now that there is a specialty site for Christian dating, asian dating, Indian dating… you get the picture. I even found one only for people living in Boston (I don’t live in Boston, but I’ve thought about moving there, and thought somehow that dating site would help me relocate). But so far the whole single dating scene wasn’t doing it for me. I had been on 2 dates so far, and the only thing to come from the dating sites was a monthly bill.
Anyway, back to Conan O’Brian. First class on a 737 allows for a fair amount of moving about, and I pretended to be looking for a certain magazine, and asked him to see what was available from his seat. I think he knew it was an excuse to talk to him, but he seemed to like it, and we started chatting. I got up courage and told him I liked his show, that I was dating again, and that I would be interested in an “adult dating” encounter with him. I think he was a bit surprised by my directness, but quietly let me know that he was free for dating too. I gave him the name of my hotel, suggested a time to meet up, and returned to my seat.
One of the big secrets of online dating sites is that most of the people are married. Ok, not most of them, but a lot. As in, I’m in a relationship and not happy, so I’ll start looking now in case this marriage falls apart. Or maybe not even married, but definitely taken. I thought the Christian dating site would be different, but it doesn’t seem so. Asian dating sites, Indian dating sites, Black dating sites, Hispanic dating sites…they’re all full of married people. The only one that seems different is Perfectmatch.com, which screens for married people and felons, but I didn’t have too much success there either.
